Mavado - So Special Official Video
I used to visit my family in Jamaica every holiday season when I was a kid, but as I got older, the frequency of my trips subsided. I didn’t fully appreciate then what my parent’s birth country had to offer. This past summer, I got the opportunity to appease a decade old regret - I went to Jamaica to celebrate my 30th birthday.
I loved every waking minute that I was on the island (see pics below). The sun…the water…the food (I’m actually overdue for a nice plate of oxtail) and of course the music. The theme track to my spiritual adventure was Mavado’s So Special. Not necessarily because of the lyrics (although I love how Mavado phrases his words) but because it literally was blasting out of every filthy speaker throughout the entire country.
In typical American fashion with respect to reggae music, we stateside are crazy late on this tune. My cousin Ashley, who recently moved up to NY from Ft Lauderdale via Kingston, laughed me out of the room when I told her that the song was only now being played on commercial radio.
Well at least we aren’t too late on the video!
