DJ Premier - Live on WBLS 2.24.95

Made for me by Aja Riddick circa '94

Being a Hip-Hop “student” in New York City (Brooklyn stand up!!) during the 80’s and 90’s was a tremendous privilege.  Especially as a young DJ-in-training, I had many professors - Mister Magic, Marley Marl, Chuck Chillout, Clark Kent, Pete Rock, Kid Capri, and The Awesome Two - that were able to transmit their weekly lessons directly to my home school.  There are so many “Chief Rockers” that inspired me to study hard, in hopes that one day I would be able to graduate with Grandmaster Honors.

Perhaps the most influential of them all was DJ Premier. I even had both of my 1200’s on the right hand side, up until a few years ago.  The Thunderstorm with DJ Premier would air every Friday night on 107.5 WBLS.  I don’t recall it lasting more than a couple of years, but what great years those were!!! It was during Primo’s primetime production period (ooh alliteration).  Because he was arguably the illest producer at that time, listeners were treated to bomb-dropping world premieres.  I can vividly recall hearing Biggie’s Unbelievable for the first time, recording it, then playing it literally 100 times!

Here’s a Thunderstorm mix that I recently digitized from my collection of classic NYC rap radio.  Enjoy.

My good friend and partner in crime Peter recently conducted a fabulously executed event with none other than Primo.  It was posted on other blogs, but f*ck it, that’s my people.  For real! Here’s some footage from the show.

You I really enjoyed that bit with Peter, that shit was dumb funny. Oh and hearing the old radio joint just made me mad that not even half of that stuff made it down to DC. I remember having my cousin just cop mixtapes from NY when they went up north because amazing shit like this rarely made its way down to DC. Anyway thanks for the post. ILL shit. I’m a DJ, and for as long a I can remember i have always held primo as one of my fav DJ. His knowledge of music and the way the primo scratches DAMN SON…..
